In 1944 Sara Goldman and her family were deported to Auschwitz. Her husband was killed in the gas chambers. Only Sara and her youngest daughter remained alive and shared the next two years in those dreadful conditions. In order to survive such hell, Sara stole a notebook (KRANKENBUCH) and a black pencil. She started writing poetry which, once freed from captivity, became her personal diary.
